Cardless is a fintech startup. Our mission is to make consumer credit more accessible, useful, and engaging, and we do that by partnering with brands to help them launch financial products.

We're headquartered in San Francisco, but we're building a remote-friendly team across the continental US. We were founded in 2019, and we last raised a $40M Series B in 2021. Our investors include top VCs like Activant, Accomplice, and Greycroft; founders from successful startups like Plaid, SeatGeek, and FiveStars; and executives from major sports teams like the Boston Celtics and Phoenix Suns.

The Role

Cardless is seeking a Head of Engineering to mentor and lead our engineering managers and their direct reports. This role reports to the CEO and co-founder and is a critical member of the leadership team that will work collaboratively on product and business strategy and execution as we scale. The role will work cross-functionally with internal teams like product, operations, risk, customer experience and more as a thought leader and partner to advise on strategic and product roadmaps. As the leader of the team, the Head of Engineering will partner with recruiting and HR to attract, recruit, mentor and retain a diverse team of engineers.

The Responsibilities

  • Mentor, lead, build and grow our engineer management organization and staff. You will develop and inspire our engineering leaders and help attract top talent to join our team. 
  • Deliver impact. You will work with the engineering team and provide roadmap guidance on product and feature launches, help make strategic decisions, and define OKRs/KPIs and prioritization.
  • Establish technical excellence. Help us be the best engineering team! Create standards to ensure consistent levels of quality, performance, reliability and scalability. 
  • Cross-functional work. You will work with other company leaders and stakeholders to execute on the company vision.

The Requirements

  • Minimum 10-12 years experience with a demonstrated track record of success in engineering
  • Minimum 5+ years of management experience, and specific experience leading and mentoring engineering managers
  • Prior or current experience in a fast-paced, early stage startup environment with a willingness to pitch in
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an ambiguous, complex and highly regulated environment
  • Experience with recruiting, interviewing and closing engineers and technical talent
  • Excellent communication, leadership and interpersonal skills
  • BS or advanced degree (MS+) in a technical field (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or similar)


We're headquartered in and this role is based in San Francisco, CA, with a beautiful office in the Mission District (near Dolores Park). We regularly bring our team together for offsites & trips, about every 2 months, both for fun and for work. We cover all travel & lodging in these cases.
